A full-house project that took the kitchen, the flooring and the finishes at the same time, so the family lived through the disruption once instead of three times.
The original fireplace was dark brick with a small hearth, sitting under a tall ceiling that made it look smaller than it was. Refacing it in a light stacked stone and running that stone down onto an extended hearth gave the wall something in proportion to the room.
The mantel is a floating walnut box built to the width of the stone rather than bought to a standard size, and the television above it is mounted with the wiring run inside the wall so nothing shows.
Fireplace remodels are usually a short job next to a kitchen or a bathroom, which makes them a good way to see how a contractor works before you hand over something bigger.
